  First visit today for lunch and it was very busy. The charming young woman behind the bar was singlehanded and untrained. She isn't a member of staff and told us twice that she was "just helping out". Needed at least two people behind the bar as service was very slow. I was not impressed to be told that they had run out of sparkling water! We had a rotten table and asked to be moved, but as they were fully booked this wasn't possible. To be fair, we had only booked the day before, but weren't happy to be in a cold back room next to the pool table and gents loo. The promised menus did not arrive at our table and eventually my husband went up to the bar to request them. When the food came our starters were delicious. My husband had the medley of woodland mushrooms in a creamy blue cheese sauce and I had asparagus soup. It was hot and very tasty, and the warm bread that came with it was just right. We both ordered the roast beef which came to the table in good time and was hot. However, we were surprised and disappointed to be presented with plates swimming in gravy! Yuk. A good selection of vegetables, but the beef was cut very thin and we wondered whether it had been freshly carved from a joint or whether it had been bought in ready cut. Disappointing, as we'd heard good reports of the food, and we won't rush back there.
